India's Electricity Context

The electricity generation was +1,750,000 GWh in 2023 and the evolution of the generation and the mix by source is observed in Figure at the right:

Coal power contributes to 72% of electricity production and its generation (in GWh) grows year by year. In the other hand, India has challenging goals for decarbonization. Indian leaders have committed to lowering their country’s dependence on coal and other fossil fuels, reduce its carbon intensity by 45 percent, and achieve 50 percent cumulative electric power from renewables by 2030. Equally ambitious, India would like to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2070.

The Central Electricity Authority, depending on the Ministry of Power, ruled in 2023 a mandatory regulation for coal-fired power plants that requires the implementation of the flexible operation of the Coal based thermal generating Units as per the Phasing Plan specified by the Authority.

Indian Government delivered deep technical & economic studies on the field and concluded to balance legal requirements to become more flexible with an economic compensation to achieve it.

CII Flexibility Conference

Flex India 2024 was organized by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) at the India Habitat Centre, New Delhi, in partnership with the Electric Power Research Institute, and it was focused on “Preparing India’s Coal-fired Power Plants for Flexible Operations.”

The conference featured over 100 participants from major thermal power plants, including NTPC, Adani, BHEL, CESC, Nabha Power, Delhi Pollution Control, and Gujarat State Electricity Corporation, as well as other key stakeholders.

An interesting lineup of people attended the event and explored critical topics such as overcoming operational challenges, international experiences, and case studies on successful flexible operations.
